Keep Your Dog Safe This Christmas: Learn How to Protect Your Dog From Top Holiday Hazards

The holidays are supposed to be a joyous time for the whole family - and that, of course, includes your dog. Since you spend all year looking out for the health and safety of your dog, it’s important to recognize the extra hazards that pop up during the holiday season. From toxic plants to decorations that damage, a little precaution is needed to ensure things go smoothly. Recognizing the dangers, and having the tools required to deal with them, such as a DIY dog fence, is all that’s needed, so here’s what you need to know to have a happy holiday season.

Toxic Holiday Plants
Mistletoe, poinsettia, and holly are common holiday plants, but they are also toxic to dogs. When buying these for your home, go for the artificial versions. If someone gives you one of these plants, place it in a spare room that the dog doesn’t enter. Placing the plants high out-of-reach isn’t always enough, because your dog could eat fallen leaves faster than you can pick them up.

Trail Report: FHSP - Panther Branch to Debord Falls (Father's Day Hike)

Father's Day has come and gone but it is still fresh in my memory. The day before I had ran a 16 mile trail race in a little over 3 hours, but on Father's Day when asked what I wanted to do, I wanted to spend the day in the woods with my girls. We would only hike a little over 2 miles but the time it took, I wish lasted forever.

I awoke in the morning to find My Robin in the kitchen making breakfast, pancakes and bacon. It was scrumptious and went wonderfully well with my cup-of-joe. It took a bit for Bug to eat, and in that time we got the kiddo up and let her go through her morning routine as well.

Trail Report - Slave Falls/Needle Arch Revisited (A Father's Day Hike)

I really couldn't ask for a better family. Constantly and always on my mind, are the Great Outdoors. Having four walls around me on a daily basis is actually quite confining, suffocating, and if it weren't for the light switch, the fluorescents would be deadly. So when asked what I wanted to do for Father's Day, naturally I wanted to get in the woods for a hike with my girls, and that is exactly what we did.

I had two hikes in mind, one being at Frozen Head, the other in The Big South Fork. Considering that Robin and I had just run a 5k the day before and Robin's back has been and still is in a "shape," I figured hiking to the fire tower at Frozen Head wouldn't be such a good idea. So I opted for the Slave Falls Loop trail. Robin and I hiked to the falls and to Needle Arch last year while she was pregnant with Bug so I figured we could revisit them now that Bug is here.

Thank You October, Hello November

We hope that everyone had a wonderfully spooky Halloween. You should all be well on your way to hiking off all those extra sugary calories that have been consumed by the mouthfuls the past couple of days. Of course if you aren't then we completely understand. We had a good Halloween as always, complete with some pumpkin carvings and the girls getting dressed up to get some loot. Kiddo went this year as a Panda Bear and the Joders went as a Kitty Cat. Next year will be a different story as Dinah will be here and will be almost a year old. I wonder what we will dress her as? I guess we will find out next year.

With everything going on we haven't really had time to post or have time to do things to post about. Regardless though we are still getting traffic to the blog and that in a large way is due to you our fellow bloggers who link out to us. That's right, once again it's time that we show our bloggers some love and say thank you for all that you do. So without further ado, we'd like to thank the following for the traffic they generate for us:

Happy Birthday To Robin!!!

Thirty years ago today, I was 6-years old and if I remember correctly at school in the first grade. It was also the same day I became an uncle for the very first time. It's hard to believe that on that same day, the girl I was to spend the rest of my life with, was also born. At that time, the day was pretty special because my nephew was born. It was even more special, albeit unbeknownst to me at that time how much more special it was.

Robin grew up loving the outdoors (and apparently ice cream). Her parents were avid hikers and backpackers. If there was a weekend off and their gang could get together, they were on the trail headed to some destination for an overnight in the Cumberlands or the Smokies. When Robin was old enough, she would accompany them on those trips with her own little pack to carry her clothes, blanket, and stuffed animal. Many a night she spent under the stars. It makes me wonder and I believe that there were possibly times we were looking at the same stars. Then again maybe not because here in Tennessee she had more stars to look at than I did down outside of New Orleans.

Thirty years ago today my partner for life, my best friend, compatriot, wife, and confidant was born and overly joyous am I that she was. She keeps me anchored and grounded. She gives me reason to do what I do. She provides for us at home and I couldn't be more blessed to call her my wife and my best friend. We share the trail together, and I couldn't ever imagine having a more suitable trail mate. She completes me where I fall short and vice-versa. It is with great admiration and loving-ness that I wish Robin a most joyous and happy birthday.

I Love You Robin, Happy Birthday.
Your Timmy

Hiking to Camp Sam - Norris Dam State Park 7/2/2011

Another 4th of July has come and past us by. Two weeks later and the neighbors are finally getting the fireworks out of their system. Of course it'll probably be another 2 weeks before their completely out of explosives... and then they'll reach into their ammunition stores. For the rest of us (here at the Bird House) we are over the basement fiasco, thankfully. The pipes are repaired, everything that was ruined or deemed as junk has been cleaned out, and hauled off to the landfill. I call that progress.

So the weekend of 4th of July (on the day of the basement fiasco and prior to the get together), Robin and I decided we needed to take solace in the woods for a little while. It had been nearly a month since our last hike so it was well overdue. We packed up our day packs and headed out to Norris Dam State Park, just a hop, skip, and a jump from our house, and decided to hike the Camp Sam trail via the Norris Dam Tea room.

Happy Fourth of July

It's been a long weekend, and if you're anything like us, you've been busy hiking, attending parties, and cleaning out basements. o_O Well okay, you've only been doing the first two, and maybe enjoying some fireworks. We were able to get out for a hike on Saturday of just over 2 miles at Norris Dam State Park and then attended a big family/friend get together later that day where Robin and I won the "Cornhole" Tournament (don't laugh, it's a real game and not what the name implies). If you don't believe me look it up on Google but do so at your own risk. Oh and we will have a hike report up in a couple of days too.

So today we celebrate our country's independence. We feel very fortunate to live in this great country, that we are free to play silly named games if we want to, or have parties with our friends and family when we want to, and many other things that we take for granted (like running water) and that if we lived in some other country, we could be arrested for doing. For that we are truly thankful that we live in the USA, even if we have some major problems with the economy and plumbing. Anyway for today we will be swimming in the basement - having been overly and prematurely motivated to clean due to the mess that we were blessed with after our party attending festivities on Saturday. I guess that's what we get for playing cornhole, we get cornholed.

We hope you are all having a safe and enjoyable holiday. God Bless the USA and God Bless all of you.

Happy Fourth of July.
Tim and Robin

Happy Memorial Day (and the Winner Is....)

We hope that everyone has enjoyed their long Memorial Day weekend. We hope it has been fun and safe for you all. We've been having our fun that's for sure, starting with our two 7-inning vacations on Friday. We spent the day at the pool playing ladder ball on Saturday (of course this was after taking care of some yard work). We followed that up with some much needed shopping on Sunday (frankly we were all in need of some new duds so we spoiled ourselves a little). Today, we played tourist in our own back yard Pigeon Forge, spending the day at Dollywood's Splash Country. We play tourist in Pigeon Forge about twice a year (once around Christmas Time to look at the lights, and at least once visiting attractions like Dollywood's Splash Country or Dollywood).

We are definitely wore out after having been beat down by the sun all day. I don't know how much longer we will last before our beds claim us for the night only to rest up and start the rat race all over again in the morning. However, the bright side to this are that after having today off, it's only a 4-day work week (Woo-hoo).

So before our bodies decide to shut down on us for the evening, I know you've all been waiting to see who won the "Orion Sky" print giveaway. You've all shared your favorite constellations, liked us and Random Joy Fine Arts and Photography on Facebook, shared the post on your walls, Tweeted and even mentioned the giveaway on your blogs. For that we thank you all for your participation and support of Appalchia & Beyond. So without further ado, we give you the winner of the "Orion Sky" print by Random Joy Fine Arts and Photography. After plugging in the 26 comment numbers into the Random Number Generator at Random.org, we are pleased to announce that comment #7 - Jobiwan is our grand winner. Joe, send us an email at appalachiaandbeyond (at) gmail (dot) com with your mailing address and we will get the print out to you in the next couple of days. We hope you enjoy the print, after reading your first entry comment we are certain that you will.

That's all we have this evening. Our bodies are ready to shut down at any time now, so we'll bid y'all adieu and hope you have a wonderful week. Stay tuned as we will have more posts to follow in the coming days and there may even be another giveaway opportunity for you to jump on too.

Happy Trails,
Tim and Robin

Happy Easter!

It's a gorgeous day here in sunny East Tennessee, and we just had to stop by and wish everyone a Happy Easter. We have enjoyed our time off, and it's allowed us to be very productive around the house. But we can't wait to get back to blogging on Monday! We have lots to share including a gosling rescue, pictures of the Norris Dam open floodgates, and two gear reviews on our Eno hammock and the Bass Pro compression sacks.

Until then, have a blessed Easter Sunday!

Oh, and Ms. Coo wanted you all to know that she's practicing up. Maybe next year she'll make the cut as the NEW Cadbury Easter Bunny.

Spring Fling Staycation

With the long weekend and holiday ahead of us, Tim and I will be taking a small break from blogging.

Now knowing us, we'll come across something that we can't help but post, but we didn't want anyone to think we'd abandoned them.

With Earth Day falling on Good Friday, Tim will be off work for once to celebrate with me. Unfortunately, Ashby has school tomorrow due to snow-day makeup, but Tim and I plan on getting outside. Hopefully we'll get a chance to take early morning photos and work in our little gardens, maybe even plant some tomatoes.

We'll be dying Easter eggs with Ashby, planning a Spring fresh Easter menu, and spend Sunday celebrating the resurrection of our Savior with the family.

We hope everyone has a wonderful Earth Day and Easter. We'll be back Monday with a weekend full of pictures to share, and we even have a couple gear reviews we'd like to tackle. In the meantime, we'd love to hear how you plan on spending your holiday.

Joyeux Mardi Gras!

It's been a while since we posted a picture of Coo, and she's feeling a little neglected. She's always complaining about Clover being in the spotlight, and how she wished they'd make leashes for hamsters.
She says she'd love to hike, but only at night. :-)  Until then, she'll just have to stick to holidays.

Happy Fat Coo's-Day!

My Perfect Trailmate

I've never been one to believe a person can have a soulmate. I don't believe in destiny or fate. I don't believe in love at first sight. I don't believe that the stars were aligned just so to provide me the closeness I have with that one, special individual.

I, on the contrary, believe in consequence, deliberateness, coincidence, and the hand of God. I believe in balance and perfect compliments.

Before Tim came into my life, I was a lone hiker. I traveled the trails with me, myself, and I - and I was very reluctant to change that. Sure, I would occasionally hike with other people, but they just didn't compliment my style. They either hiked too fast, too slow, didn't care to "stop and smell the roses," or I would find them far behind me taking another break. I liked being alone on the trail to listen to my inside voice, to let my soul touch nature, to see the face of God and watch it smile back at me. Now, I can't picture myself on the trail without Tim there.

Tim and I have very different personality types. We're not the couple where one is finishing the other's sentence. In fact, that's one of my biggest pet peeves! He's outgoing - I'm restrained. He likes attention, and I shy away from it like it's the plague. He's optimistic - I'm the pessimist. He's relaxed and patient, while I'm hot-headed and in a constant state of hyper-awareness. I'm the practical one, though. He likes to take (in my opinion - unnecessary) risks. I'm the morning person - he'd rather sleep till noon. He's concrete; I'm abstract. He's the go-getter, and I'm the daydreamer. He even likes mayonnaise (EWWW!).

But even though we are practically polar opposites, he is my perfect compliment. And if there ever were such a thing, he's my perfect trailmate. When we're out there, that is when the balance between us becomes so skewed. We are no longer two different people walking one path. We are one. We share the same thoughts without speaking, photograph the same eye-catcher without knowing, we communicate through looks, glances, and nods of the head. We both tread softly, we walk at the same pace, we even need breaks at the same time even though our physical conditions are also comparable to night and day.

Never before could I have imagined that I would have found someone exactly like me on the trail. I am so thankful that I don't have to keep company with myself anymore.

Happy Valentine's Day, Love.

Monday Fun Stuff

I don't think any of us look forward to Monday. Monday marks the end of weekend adventures, the beginning of the work/school week, five days worth of getting up before the sun (I really should do this all the time), more homework than is good for anyone, and the day designated for laundry, amongst other things.

Monday is weird for me. It never feels right. It's a day of extreme reality check. It's all the things I should have done over the weekend, but didn't 'cause I spent my time having fun using my feet for what God intended them to be used for. Because my weekend is full of conversation and laughter, and my Monday's remind me of the quieter time. Not that I don't enjoy that, because I do, but it's different -- and in all these years I've never really gotten used to it.

So, on Monday morning while Ashby dolls herself up for school, I occupy my mind catching up on blogs I follow and window shopping online. I usually find myself on Amazon reading the "LOOK INSIDE!"s. This morning though, a glance at the calendar reminded me that Valentine's Day was right on the horizon.

"Another commercialized holiday," says my brain. Tim and I usually just do something a little special (like breakfast in the park) while we sweeten Ashby up with the traditional bear and candy heart. Sometimes he buys me flowers, but he's "learnt" over the years that I'd rather have flowers growing in the dirt. So, now (other than the cut daisy bouquets I can't get enough of) flowers come home striving to grow instead of living to die. :-)

I was deep in my Etsy.com excursion, my sleep-deprived brain on overdrive, trying desperately to think of something "outdoor-oriented" to buy my Timmy this V-day, when I came across the following:

Although the resemblance is uncanny and the shop is local (!), I didn't feel any love coming from Mr. YeeHaw Bunny, and promptly moved on to this:

Now this had potential, right? Two cuff links for two wrists... a symbol of compatibility and love??? Plus, if he were to get lost on that huge campus he works on, he could find his way. Or not...

So, how about some Sasquatch Ipod porn love? It's unfortunate that Sasquatch looks so blue here. Nothing says "Happy Valentine's Day" like a sad, naked Sasquatch. Moving on... Something a little more cheerful maybe?

Oooooohhhhhh! A lightweight hiking hat! Eco-friendly and all. Personally, though, it looks a bit feminine for Tim's taste. I wonder how much she had to pay that guy to model this. Sometimes things look really good on paper. NEXT!

This definitely has potential. If there is one thing Tim hates, it's snakes. So if I got him this Voodoo Snake, I'd never have to shoo away another snake on the trail! I could just stand there and scream, "Poke it's eyes out, Tim!" or...

I could just get these nose warmers. We're both always complaining about our noses being cold on the trail, and Eskimo kisses are nearly impossible unless you're willing to risk thermal conductivity and refreeze. Plus, they're on SALE!

But... I think what I should really do is buy this set of five "Hiking is for Lovers" postcards (too cute!). I'll just sign them "Wish you were here! It's gorgeous up here on the AT. With Love, Your Robin"

Happy Coo Year!

Ms. Coo wishes you a Happy Coo Year!

Looking to 2011

The New Year is rapidly approaching and it appears that we are once again going to fall short of our annual goal of 100 miles hiked. We aren’t dismayed by this. On the contrary, it has been a great year in terms of hiking. We came a lot closer to our goal than we ever have in past years, and hiked a whole slew of trails we had never hiked before. However, it is time to plan for 2011, and really we’ve never been the type for resolutions as we’ve accepted the fact that we will fail miserably within the first few weeks of the New Year. Seriously, who hasn’t? I suppose a better question would be who has stuck to a resolution and was successful? I’m sure there are a few and I admire those with the resolve, dedication, and will power it takes to accomplish such a feat.

Robin and I have taken to a new philosophy, one from the vein of simple, free living. The philosophy I speak of is living without goals or rather, very loose goals. We find that having hardened, strict goals tends to narrow our focus so much that we miss other opportunities along the way. Instead, we form very open ended goals so that we can stop and smell the roses along the way if you will. By doing this, we can easily adapt to situations and circumstances that might be out of our control. With this attitude it is my hope that we accomplish more than we ever imagined possible, and that God will lead us to where we are supposed to be.

As for our outdoor goals for 2011, our typical "hike 100 miles" still remains. If we make it then great, if not that’s okay, too.  Sometimes things don’t go as you hope they will but later you realize it’s probably best it didn’t.  Besides, if you dwell upon it too much, it might drive you nuts. Another loose goal for 2011 is to get at least 1 or 2 overnight backpacking trips in. Once again this is an open goal to which, if it happens, awesome and if not that’s okay, too. First, I have to convince Robin that Ms. Coo will be fine with the babysitter. Otherwise, I'll be packing in with a "Hamster on Board" sign.

Finally, we hope to hike some more of what is completed of the Cumberland Trail, climbing Bird Mountain at Frozen Head State Park and out towards Mushroom Rock on the Frozen Head Segment and climbing up to Cross Mountain on the New River Segment are two that stand out foremost in our minds.

That’s really about it. So long as we can get outdoors when possible or permissible, and enjoy all that the Appalachians have to offer, then satisfied we shall be.  Now we turn the page over to you, our readers. What goals, resolutions, or hopes do you have in 2011 pertaining to the great outdoors? Leave us your comments. We love hearing from you all and sharing ideas and information.

Happy Trails and Happy New Year,
Tim and Robin

White Christmas

We hope that everyone had a wonderful Christmas filled with many blessings. Did everyone get what they wanted? We sure hope so. If you are in the Southern Appalachians then you got an extra special treat on Christmas morning much like we did here. We awoke on Christmas morning with about one and a half inches of snow on the ground. If I'm not mistaken, this was the first White Christmas for this area in several years. For me, it was the first that I can distinctly remember. Considering that I was originally a city boy from New Orleans, snow was not a regular occurrence.

We got another one to two inches Christmas night and it continued snowing off and on throughout the next day. Matter of fact, we tried our luck in the early afternoon hours of the 26th and decided we would head towards Townsend, TN. It would have been nice to have made it into Cades Cove in the Smokies to capture a bit of this winter wonderland through Wifey's camera.

Unfortunately, by the time we hit the first part of the foothills the snow was coming down really heavy and we decided driving conditions were unlikely to improve. Good thing we did. Some areas in the Smokies received over a foot of snow! Tourists have been "trapped" for days - but conditions are improving now. Temps have warmed and there is rain in the forecast.

In any case, we stopped at I.C. King park on the way back through. Robin was able to get out and snap a couple shots at the pier before she determined that any significant time outside on the river would likely cause important appendages to freeze and fall off. So we called in food and headed home.

Our uneventful trip became very eventful though once we got our food. We'd received a call from home. Weather conditions were worsening. The roads were "turning white." Kiddo asked if her cuz (Kiddo 2) could spend the night, and since it was on the way home (typically), we agreed to pick her up. By the time we started towards her house, the snow was coming down around us and every mile closer the roads were getting whiter and whiter. I'm not sure how we got up the hill to her house and back down but Wifey did it. She is used to this stuff, or at least, she's got more experience in it than I do.

The drive home was a very slow one. The roads were getting pretty slick with snow and ice, and we ended up having to take the long way around just to avoid the backroads. Luckily though we made it home, safe and sound, and indulged in some "After Christmas Laziness." No shopping for us! Santa brought us more than we could have ever needed.

Happy Trails,
Tim and Robin
