Rokit Fuel Oatmeal - Gear Review

There's nothing like a good hot bowl of oatmeal in the morning when you're out camping especially on a chilly morning and you're warming your bones by the fire with a nice hot cup of coffee. It fills your belly and warms your soul. Most days it's usually just a packet of instant oatmeal, unless you're a culinary wizard with a dehydrator and have bagged your own recipe. Of course if you want something other than plain old instant oatmeal packets you can always try out Rokit Fuel oatmeal.

Rokit fuel oatmeal is an all natural alternative to regular instant oatmeal. Rokit Fuel Oatmeals are made with anywhere from 7 to 15 whole foods.  There are no soy, dairy or other isolate products and are all natural and fit for a vegan.

Rokit Fuel oatmeal comes in 4 different flavors of which we had the opportunity to try all four. Cherry Almond, Chocolate Dream, Stud Muffin, and Pumpkin Chocolate. The names themselves can provide you with all sorts of imagery that would delight anyone's pallet. We were looking forward to trying them out when they arrived. We received all 4 flavors in individual cups that had see through lids. Another way of tickling your pallet prior to eating. The ingredients of each looked quite scrumptious, rolled and milled oats, almonds, cherries, flax seeds, etc. We couldn't wait to dig in.

There are a few different recommendations on how to prepare the oatmeals including hot or cold, with milk instead of water, as a topping on your yogurt or any other healthy dessert, or blended in with a smoothie. We of course opted to just have them as breakfast with hot water to prepare them. Preparation is simple especially with the individual cups. All you have to do, is heat some water, remove the lids from the cups and pour your hot water in. If you wish, you can add other things. We opted to try them in the natural state and not defile them with any decadent ingredients.

After trying all four flavors, we can honestly say that only two of them really satisfied our pallets. The Cherry Almond was by far the favorite in the household. Choked full of almonds and other ingredients such as rolled oats, dark brown sugar, amaranth, rye flakes, tart cherries, whole and milled flax seed, sesame seeds, sea salt, and pure almond extract the Cherry Almond was indeed the best of the bunch and we would definitely try this one again and again. Seven whole foods and here is the nutritional breakdown of the Cherry Almond Rokit Fuel oatmeal:

Our second favorite was Stud  Muffin and not just because it describes Tim to a tee (NOT!). Stud muffin contains 15 whole foods with the following ingredients: Rolled Oats, Rye Flakes, Dark Brown Sugar, Dates, Raisins, Whole and Milled Flax Seed, Sunflower Seeds, Pecans, Sesame Seeds, Almonds, Walnuts, Blueberries, Tart Cherries, Cinnamon, Sea Salt, Nutmeg, Cloves. It did seem a bit bland so we added some honey to the mix which turned it from vegan to non-vegan in .2 seconds flat. It helped with the taste a lot. I'd venture to say, you could also add a spoonful of peanut butter to the mix and that would kick it up a notch too. The nutritional breakdown of Stud Muffin is as follows:
  • Serv. Size: 3/4 cup
  • Servings Per Container: 1
  • Amount Per Serving:

Third on the list was the Pumpkin Chocolate, which had high hopes in our books just by the name alone. We love pumpkin stuff and were really eager to give this one a try. Unfortunately it didn't quite live up to our expectations. To be honest it left a bittersweet aftertaste that Tim wasn't very fond of, and for Robin, one bite taught her not to touch it with a ten foot pole due to the heavy taste of cloves. Robin isn't very fond of cloves after suffering a dry socket a few years back from a wisdom tooth extraction. Heck to Robin, cloves might as well be poison. Complete with 12 whole foods the ingredients are as follows: Rolled Oats, Rye Flakes, Dark Brown Sugar, Semi Sweet Chocolate, Dates, Pecans, Whole and Milled Flax Seed, Sunflower Seeds, Sesame Seeds, Almonds, Pumpkin Flakes, Cinnamon, Sea Salt, Nutmeg, Cloves. I would venture to guess, the semi-sweet chocolate is to blame for the bittersweet aftertaste. That's something you just have to have a taste for. For the Pumpkin Chocolate here's the nutritional break down:
  • Serv. Size: 3/4 cup
  • Servings Per Container: 1
  • Amount Per Serving:
    • Calories 390

Last and well the very least favorite was the Chocolate Dream. Actually none of us really liked it and I'd say it was the heavy use of semi-sweet chocolate. Either you've acquired the taste for it or you haven't, and clearly in this use, we haven't. Ingredients for Chocolate Dream include the following, complete with 8 whole foods: Rolled Oats, Dark Brown Sugar, Semi Sweet Chocolate, Amaranth, Coconut, Pecans, Walnuts, Whole and Milled Flax Seed, Sesame Seeds, Cocoa Powder, Sea Salt, Cinnamon. As for the nutritional facts, they are as follows:
  • Serv. Size: 3/4 cup
  • Servings Per Container: 1
  • Amount Per Serving:
    • Calories 320
    •  Calories from Fat 120
      • Total Fat 13g (20% DV)

    • Total Carbohydrates 47g (16% DV)

There ya have it, Rokit Fuel Oatmeal, as their saying goes, "Not for Wussies". If it's the Chocolate Dream then we are "Wussies" with that flavor. The others are definitely worth trying and having again. They will also make for great backpacking breakfasts too.

Happy Trails,
Tim and Robin
