SteriPEN and Outdoor Retailer

I know it's been a while since you last heard from us. We've been ultra busy the past couple of weeks, complete with a family reunion and a two day road trip down the Blue Ridge Parkway which included stops at Blowing Rock and Grandfather Mountain. There will be more about that in two separate posts in over the next few days. For now, we just wanted to let you know we are all well, trying to stay cool, and staying super busy with baby and all. Now to the heart of the matter.

As some of you know, especially those in the outdoor blogorealm, the Summer Outdoor Retailer (OR) show is coming up this week and there's a few of you that will be heading out to see what great "Newfangeled" (a termed used by Robin) technology will be released in the fall of this year as well as the Spring of 2013. You'll be among the first of the outdoor lovers to drool over these items in person. For us however, we will not be making it to OR. Maybe one day they will decided to have OR in places other than Utah (Tennessee would be great :D). Until then we have to sit back and wait for all our blogging pals to post their stories on the new gear and happenings from OR.

Luckily, this year we are getting a small taste of a few pieces of gear that will be at OR this year. One such item comes from SteriPEN. Here's what they have to say and offer for their new product lines:

The NEW SteriPEN Ultra-the world's first, most sophisticated, most assured portable water purifier.
Nearly a third of the hikers/travelers that head out each year will end up compromising their intestinal health by drinking “bad “water. SteriPEN has been offering a healthy solution since the late 1990’s. This August, SteriPEN introduces its newest model the SteriPEN Ultra, featuring an OLED indicator that flashes a smile when your water is safe to drink.

  • At 4.8 oz, SteriPEN Ultra weighs less than a good sized apple, and treats 50 full liters before you have to recharge its internal battery using a USB cable.
  • User-friendly, high contrast OLED screen makes evident of the performance of the pen and the safety of your drinking water.
  • Treats 1 L in 90 seconds, .5L in just 48 seconds!
  • USB-rechargeable via computer, wall outlet or portable solar panel.
  • 8,000 treatment impact-resistant quartz UV bulb saves 16,000 plastic water bottles from the landfill.
  • MSRP $99.95   Available to the retailers late 4th quarter 2012
We’ll also be showcasing the Freedom Solar Bundle. The premium Freedom SteriPEN, our ultra-light, high end travel model is now enhanced by a matching compact solar charger the size of an iphone. This 2.6oz, USB rechargeable model comes with everything you’ll need to treat your water, store it, and recharge. MSRP $149.95. Available to retailers 4th quarter 2012.

SteriPEN is a small company on the coast of Maine. Inventor Miles Maiden, created and patented the first portable UV light water purifier in the late 90's. Since then, Hydro-Photon (makers of SteriPEN) has over 2 dozen patents and patents pending, worldwide. SteriPENs are used all over the world by travelers, emergency rescue workers, climbers of Mt Everest, householders, weekend hikers, and Navy seals. No stranger to the limelight, SteriPEN was recognized in 2011 by TIME Magazine as one of the Top 100 Gadgets of our time.

SteriPENs are safe and well tested. Public documents show the product standing up to, and in some cases even exceeding, EPA testing standards.

How do you use it? Press a button. Wait till the light blinks. Stir for 90 seconds. Drink up!

If you’re the kind of person who likes to stack the odds in your favor, you may want to add a SteriPEN to your gear. You, and those you care about, may be glad you did.
